BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER

Unique ID: SUSS-D18220

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A late Iron Age, Romano-British button and loop fastener. The fastener has been cast in copper alloy. A similar fastener has been recorded onto the PAS database, under database record number SF-E503E7. This fastener is similar to Wild Class 1, with a solid double-boss head and heavy ring-loop (Wild 1970, 137-139, fig I no I). The whole fastener measures 22.7mm in length (which is similar to SF-E503E7 which measures 22mm. Unlike the other examples only the double boss part of the fitting survives; as the loop has broken off, leaving behind a small worn stump on the flat reverse of the bosses. The double-boss head consists of two parallel identical joining circular bosses each with a rounded front face and a flat back. Each boss measures 11.8mm in diameter and are circa 6mm thick. The parallel SF-E503E7 measured 13mm x 9mm. Wild explains (1970, 138) that there is only one example of this basic type known from a purely Roman context, that from Brough-under-Stainmore. Pre-Roman forms are known from Lydney (Gloucester) and Glastonbury. The type is probably British, manufactured during the pre-Roman period and the early years of the Roman occupation.
