An Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper alloy buckle (late 10th – early 11th century). The buckle is in two pieces with the bar and pin missing. The open-work ‘hollow’ buckle is slightly domed with a concave reverse and moulded high relief decoration. At the centre of the buckle frame is a bearded face with lentoid eyes. A groove for the pin rest falls in the middle of the beard. On either side of the head is a bird in profile with an upturned head and forked tail. Kevin Leahy (PAS finds advisor) identified the buckle as a version of the late Anglo-Scandinavian Urnes style with the open-work and the tendrils although the animals look a bit naturalistic for Urnes. The ‘hollow’ form of the buckle is in keeping with a date of late 10th – early 11th century. Pale green patina. Dimensions: length: 44.14mm; width: 53mm (approximately); thickness: 9.66mm; weight: 29.58g.
