Early Early-Medieval copper alloy styliform pin. It is bent into an S shape, and unbent would be c.107mm long. Its length is now 92.8mm.
The head end of the pin is flat and triangular, flaring to 7mm wide (and 1.5mm thick). It is pierced with a hole 2.6mm in diameter. This end then thickens and narrows into the shaft of the pin at the first bend, which here is oval in cross-section and measures 3.3x2.5mm. The shaft narrows and changes to becoms circular in cross-section below the next bend, where it is 3mm in diameter. It then thins to the point. It weighs 5.06g.
It can be difficult to distinguish between a stylus and a styliform pin, and they can also be difficult to date in the absence of diagnostic decoration. There are few comparable examples of either with perforated heads on the PAS database; compare YORYM-504434 and HAMP-75B8E1. The likely date, based on its proportions, is middle to late Anglo-Saxon.
