Cast copper alloy hasp for a lock on a casket, with the loop on which it would have pivoted having since broken off. The hasp is rectangular in plan, with a terminal tapering to a point and a horizontal rib just above where the tapering begins. At the top end of the hasp, attached at a right angle to the back is a plate or tab, 13 mm long and 10 mm wide. This back plate has one rivet hole, about 2 mm in diameter, and about 2 mm in from the end of the plate. The hole would have allowed the bar of the fixed lock to go through it to make it secure. The surface of the pendant is very pitted and corroded, revealing a reddish copper layer beneath the green corrosion product. Egan (1998) illustrates a similar mechanism on page 76, Fig.53, No.185, which is dated to the Medieval period, but no precise parallel can be found. From the style of the piece, it could also date from the Post-Medieval period.
