The copper alloy brooch is a Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Part 3, Group 4.g, flat wing ends type). It is incomplete, in poor condition. The wings of the brooch are semi-cylindrical, however, both wings are abraded and do not have their original terminals. Only a fragment of one wing remains, whereas the other is incomplete. It is uncertain whether the incomplete wing is decorated. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The bow head is hump-like and is sub-oval in section. The junction between the bow head and wings has a 'u' shaped groove which probably originally formed an integral loop to support the spring. The bow head is decorated with two parallel vertical grooves. The bow is broken possibly at its approximate mid point as the catchplate is not visible. This break is not recent. The bow is semi-circular in section. The surface of the brooch has traces of a dark brown patina, otherwise the surface is heavily abraded. The brooch measures 20mm long from the bow head to the bow break, and 12.75mm wide across the wings. It weighs 3.4g. The brooch dates to the 1st or 2nd century AD.
