Incomplete cast copper alloy knife end cap of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 – AD 1600). Length 10mm, width 15mm and 5mm thick. Weight 3.37g. The solid cap is oval in cross-section at the base where there is a narrow transverse groove which extends throughout the full width. The grove, which has a maximum width of 0.8mm, would have accommodated the missing tang. There is no iron staining within the groove to suggest that the tang would have been composed of iron. From the base, the cap terminates with two projections which form a symmetrical Y shape, as viewed in plan. These projections are also oval in cross-section and each ends with an old break. Close to each break is a narrow circumferential groove. The patina is lost and all surfaces are covered in superficial green corrosion products. The condition is fair.

Notes:

Similar knife end caps have been recorded from Kings Somborne Parish, Hampshire and Rishangles Parish in Suffolk. See Portable Antiquities Scheme finds: HAMP-BEF8A3 and SF-33A363.
