WEIGHT

Unique ID: SUSS-FB2FB3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A large and tall cone shaped lead weight, with an almost circular base. There is a small irregular perforation running through the centre of the weight. The hole is now largely filled with lead corrosion product and soil. The opening of the hole is positioned to one side of the point of the cone shape. The remains of an iron rod is still in situ inside the hole. The weight is undecorated, but the surface is scuffed and heavily indented in places. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been fishing weights dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples these weights must remain undated. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour. The weight weighs: 223g (7.9 oz).
