Roman copper alloy terret, probably of 1st or 2nd century AD date The terret is fragmentary and is from the covered-loop type. Both loops are missing and the terret is represented by a portion of the saddle-shaped 'skirt' and the pedestal beneath the upper loop. The skirt has a maximum surviving length of 32.90mm and is rising at both ends towards the terminals. The skirt has a maximum surviving width of 22.42mm and is decorated with oblique incised lines from the sides. The underside of the terret displays the two stubs from the lower ring with diameters of approximately 6mm. The stubs are 9.77mm apart. The underside has undergone minimal finishing and clearly displays the casting seam. The upper ring sat on a rectangular pedestal with a length of 18.98mm, a width of 7.79mm and a height of 4.9mm. The pedestal is decorated with a horizontal rib containing a cross hatched design. At the top of the pedestal the base of the upper ring is evident. The terret fragment weighs 18.6g and has differential surface preservation with a dark green to black patina, where preserved.
