DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)

Unique ID: SOMDOR-67CED3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A silvered copper alloy dress fastener of 16th century date, which has been made in several pieces. The dress fastener consists of two cast hollow hemi-spherical domes on a sheet metal back plate and a separately cast loop on the reverse. Each dome is decorated with a moulded ring of 'filigree' at the base and with three further 'filigree' circles of equal size on the dome. In the centre of each circle is a smaller circle, each of which has a small boss in the centre. There are three further small circles between the large circles and the edge of each hemi-sphere. There is a further boss between each of the larger circles and another right in the centre. One dome is squashed and damaged (two of the interiors of the large circles are missing). On the reverse of the dress hook is a flat rectangular loop, 14mm in length, 2mm wide and 1.5mm high, which appears to have been both rivetted and soldered on at each end. The middle of this loop has become squashed towards the back plate. Dimensions: 20.87mm by 10.91mm by 8.24mm Weight: 1.79g
