Cast copper alloy Roman bow brooch fragment, wings and top of bow only, 1st-2nd century. The undecorated wings are hollowed at the back, apparently to take a (missing) spring. The wings taper gradually to the flat-sectioned, undecorated bow, which projects straight from the back of the wings, and does not curve downwards. The bow swells slightly then tapers again just before the break. Length 26.46mm, width (across wings) 22.20mm, thickness 5.26mm, weight 4.10g. Possibly a trumpet derivative brooch - see Hattatt's 'Visual Catalogue' (2000, Oxbow) p330, no.189, no.s 443, 962, 963, although these all have hinged springs.

Class: Trumpet derivative
Sub class: spring mechanism
