Ceramic rim sherd of a hand made Vectis Ware jar of Roman date (AD 43 – AD 410). Length 45mm, width 63mm and maximum thickness 9mm. Weight 38.07g. The sherd is similar in appearance to Roman pottery known as Black Burnished Ware. The width of the sherd represents about 10% of the total circumference of the vessel and when complete the maximum diameter of the everted rim would have been about 19cm. The sherd has an inner grey core with a very dark grey internal and external burnished surface (Munsell Color 5YR 6/6). Just beneath the burnished surfaces is a thin reddish layer. A macroscopic examination of the fabric reveals that the matrix is tempered with 10-20% sub-angular medium quartz sand. The breaks appear to be old.

Notes:

Similar jars have been recovered from Combley Roman Villa and Brading Roman Villa in the Isle of Wight and have been classified as a Form 17 by Tomalin (Tomalin 1987, 30-40, ref. A23).
