BUCKLE

Unique ID: BH-6A5091

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper-alloy buckle frame of medieval date, now rather bent. The frame was originally oval, and measures 22.3mm wide by 15.3mm high and 0.9mm thick. At the bottom is a narrowed and slightly offset bar of squashed rectangular cross-section. The top and bottom sides bow outwards slightly and the outer edge is slightly thickened with a projecting lobe at either corner. At the centre of the outer edge is a pin rest with a separate copper-alloy roller. The object is corroded and the pin is missing. It weighs 1.91g. Similar buckle frames with projecting lobes to the outer edge can be seen in Egan and Pritchard 1991, fig. 46; nos. 315 and 317 have separate sheet rollers, and both came from contexts dating to the late 13th or early 14th century.
