Cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl or weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 – 1650 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 19.1mm and is 5.4mm thick. There is a circular cast hole through the whorl and this is set off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 6.3mm. The whorl weighs 9.85 grams.

The spindle whorl is undecorated. The spindle whorl is of a mid-light grey white colour with an abraded patina which covers all surfaces. The whorl has been abraded and rolled in the plough soil. The edges of the whorl have also been damaged and this has resulted in it becoming irregular in plan. The majority of the whorl is covered by a light white powdery corrosion product. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery). As this example is small it might also have been used as a weight either in the textile loom or as a fishing net weight.
