FURNITURE FITTING

Unique ID: ESS-153B31

Object type certainty: Certain

Cast copper alloy Roman mount, probably a furniture fitting or similar. The mount is circular in plan and domed in section. The main domed portion of the mount is decorated around the bottom edge with two deep grooved lines, but is otherwise plain. Extending from the top of the dome is a circular sectioned projection that terminates in an integral globular knop, delineated from the shaft by a circumfral-grooved line. To the flat underside of the mount are the remains of an iron shaft, now obscured by iron corrosion product. The mount is worn and abraded. Tiny traces of the original surface survive with a dark green patina, otherwise the object is now mid green with patches of bright green. The mount is 22.58mm long, of which 8.78mm is the projection (of which 4.96mm is the terminal). The mount is 17.4mm in diameter and weighs 20.45g. Similar mounts can be see in Allason-Jones and Miket, 1984, The catalogue of small finds from South Shields Roman fort, numbers 3.734-6.An almost exact, but slightly larger and better executed mount was found in the same area and recorded as ESS1579B3.
