Complete cast copper alloy strap fitting in the form of a hooked mount. Medieval (AD 1230 – AD 1350). Length 59mm, maximum width 8mm and maximum thickness 3mm. Weight 6.74g. The undecorated mount comprises a sub-rectangular plate with an integral hook. The plate is convex at the front and flat at the rear. It is about 30mm in length and the attachment end is slightly rounded and ends with a pointed terminal. The plate has two rivet holes (the rivets are lost), one at each end and both are 2.5mm in diameter. The integral hook is 4mm in width and is largely D-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. However, it is slightly flattened at the tip. The hook projects forward and downwards and then curves rearwards so that it has a U-shaped profile as viewed from the side. It is generally corroded with a patchy light green patina but is in a stable and fair condition.

Notes:

Similar mounts have been recorded by Read (Read 2001, 24, refs. 169-170) although these are slightly different in form, but are of similar length. Read dates these mounts: 1230-60. A shorter object of similar form from archaeological excavations in London has been classed as a strap end by Egan and Pritchard (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 156, fig. 102, ref. 728). This strap end has been dated 1270-1350. A close analogy for this Isle of Wight mount is one recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database by Finds Liaison Officer, Julian Watters. This mount has been recorded from Bletsoe Parish in Bedfordshire. However, the hook on the mount from Bedfordshire has a flat terminal and projects in the opposite direction to that of the Isle of Wight mount.
