An almost complete copper alloy strap mount in the form of an acorn. Probable sixteenth or seventeenth century date (AD 1500 - AD 1700). Length 24mm, width 11.5mm and 2mm thick. Weight 2.34g. The mount is convex at the front and flat at the rear. At the front the seed (or fruit) is plain. The cupula comprises about half the length of the piece and is decorated with low relief criss-cross hatching. At the base of the cupula is an old break where the stalk formerly protruded. The rear face has two integral spikes on the longitudinal centre-line. The top spike curves to the right and the lower spike curves to the left. The ends of each spike are missing. The piece is in fair condition and has small patches of a mid-green patina although it is also slightly corroded. Traces of tinning at the front.

Notes:

This acorn mount is similar to another mount found in Shalfleet Parish, Isle of Wight. See Portable Antiquities Scheme find: IOW-06FCB3. Other acorn mounts are also recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Mounts in similar form and style have been published by Read. These published mounts have been dated by Read to c. seventeenth century (Read 2001, 29, fig. 22, refs. 331-334).
