NUT CRACKERS

Unique ID: NARC-965401

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy hinged nutcracker dating to the late post-medieval period. One of the arms is missing following old damage; the other arm has been bent back on itself. The clamp measures 24mm in length. Its interior is not visible from the record provided (see notes, below), but would have presumably have featured indentations to grip the nut. Similarly, any decoration on the outer faces of the clamp is indiscernible. The extant handle is circular in section and features two groups of two transverse mouldings enclosing a moulding with closely-set longitudinal lines. The ends of the handle are D-shaped in section and curve out; they would have tapered to meet at the bottom prior to damage. Similar nut crackers have been recorded on this database - PAS refs. HAMP3159, NLM172 - and date to the 18th or 19th centuries.

Notes:

This record has been produced from a paper record made by Paul Woodfield; as such the artefact has not been available for examination, including measuring (the measurement was provided by the recorder, Mr Woodfield), weighing or photographing.
