Medieval Padlock slide key. Circular bow (external diameter 10mm, internal diameter 6.5mm) with spiked finial. The shank is of round section with baluster mouldings for a length of 22mm before reducing to a strip (6mm x 2mm). Cf. Medieval Household nos.258-9. The bit or terminal consists of two flattened D-section flanges set at right angles to the shank. An asymmetrical V-shaped cut-out on one side of the shank adjacent to the bit. Length 51mm. Goodall in Biddle 1990 Winchester, 1022, Type B. An incomplete example of the same form, also with spiked finial, was found in Barton Bendish (HER 17600). 12th – 14th century.
