A copper-alloy medieval circa 14th century seal matrix of 'chess pawn' type. It measures 25.6mm in height, it has a lozenge shaped suspension loop with a circular hole through its centre. The shaft has a hexagonal cross-section and the die is circular in shape measuring 20.6mm in diameter. In the centre is a 'pelican in her piety' motif - a bird with three chicks in a goblet-like nest, pecking blood from her chest to feed her chicks with. This motif represents Christ sacrificing himself for the world. The inscription around the outside reads SVXPRDIVEI. This appears to be a blundered form of 'je sv sel prive' , 'I am a private seal.' However, this is not the inscription one would expect to find on a die with the 'pelican in her piety' motif, such seals usually have the inscription, IESVS MERCI, or SVM PELICANVS, or TIMETE DEVM, meaning 'fear God.' The inscription does not fit with any of these so it seems that the maker has paired the motif with another inscription rather than any of the normal ones and also probably could not read as the legend is blundered.

Inscription: SVXPRDIV EI.
