BROOCH

Unique ID: WILT-5DFF31

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete copper alloy P-shaped brooch with a separate, rivetted four-knobbed bow and apparantly of the semi-enclosed spring type (with remains of lugs to hold the axis bar in place).
The wings are a little damaged to the under and top side, and at the side lugs. To the front there is faint diagonal incised decoration across a horizontal rib between two grooves. Where the bow extends are two more ribs with a wider groove between, again decorated with diagonal incised lines.
The bow is 12mm in width, narrowing slightly to 11mm where the leg extends. Either side of the 3.5mm wide central knobbed strip are two grooves and the resulting three ribs on each side are decorated with horizontal incised lines. Below the knobbed strip is a hoizontal groove with more diagonal incised lines and below this a semi-circular button. Below this are two more mouldings before the leg extends.
The leg is hollow except for a triangular-sectioned area at the front of the leg. The catchplate has broken and left a jagged edge to one side of the leg and the foot, set at 90° to the leg, is apparantly circular and flat.
To the reverse of the bow is a single rivet, holding in place the knobbed strip.
52mm in length, 22mm wingspan and weighs 8.81g. Cf Hattatt no.1252. Hattatt comments that brooches of this type are few and far between. They date to the early thrid century and are more common outside of Britain.
