BOW BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-E05397

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative type with Polden Hill variant spring attachment. Missing pin, catchplate; corroded patches on surfaces. The spring has 6 turns and the chord is held in a rear facing hook. The 5mm wide flaps at the wing ends wrap round the ends of the axis bar. The wing fronts have single angled and terminal grooves. The bow has a convex back, rounded front and tapers slightly to a blunt point. A central band of decoration consists of three narrow grooves; the intervening two narrow ribs are notched to appear intermittently wavy. The sheet catchplate was held in a slot, which seems to have been about 3mm deep at the foot. Width 21mm, length 54.5. The type is as Scole (Mackreth in Rogerson, EAA 5, 1977) no.2 and West Stow (West EAA 48, 1989) no.160.
