Early Saxon front plate of a copper alloy tongue-shaped two-piece sheet strap-end with round rivet hole near attachment edge, which is decorated with six shallow nicks. Below the hole decoration consists of an engraved saltire between a single and a pair of transverse engraved lines, and of a row of punched dots along the sides and around the terminal. Width 16mm at the attachment edge from which the sides taper gently. Length c.52mm (distorted). Saltires are commonly found near the broad end of such objects. This piece is a large example. 6th century.
