A Post Medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting (16th - 17th century). The fitting comprises the hooked plate and loop for suspension. The plate is trilobed with two rivet holes arranged along the midline, one near the hook and one near the base. The fitting narrows and curves around at the top to form a hook with a zoomorphic terminal - an open-mouthed beast or bird (possibly a swan). The suspension loop (10.17mm diameter) is attached to the hook. Patchy dark green/brown patina. The front surface of the plate is very rough and has many small curvilinear small raised lines. It is difficult to determine if this is decorative or corrosion. The fitting is very similar to one found in southwest Wiltshire, except the mouth on the zoomorphic terminal is closed (Read 2201:30 fig.25). Dimensions: length: 45.05m; width: 17.96mm; weight: 9.02g. Read, B. 2001. Metal Artefacts in Antiquity. Portcullis Publishing, Somerset.
