HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: IOW-A0A303

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Complete cast copper alloy sub-rectangular horse harness pendant of Medieval, thirteenth or fourteenth century (AD 1200 - AD 1400). Length 39mm, width 20mm and about 2.0mm thick. Weight 4.21g.

The pendant has a complete suspension loop turned through 90ยบ to the plane of the pendant. It is 22mm in length and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The loop is filled with corroded iron which is probably the remains of the bar which enabled the pendant to suspend from a mount. The front face of the plate which measures about 20mm x 17mm is slightly convex and corroded. It is slightly wider at the bottom than at the top. Decoration on the front is in the form of a rectangular border enclosing a decorated field, the details of which are no longer discernable due to corrosion. The rear face is flat and also corroded. A small area of light green patina survives at the front where traces of gilding can be seen on the surface of the patina and also on the corroded areas.
