Pottery sherd from the base of a large substantial thin walled storage jar or jug probably dating from the later medieval period (1450 - 1600 AD). The fabric of the sherd is relatively hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and broken burnt pottery inclusions. The fabric also contains a large amount of sand like grains. The fabric colour is mid grey. The inner surface of the pottery is a mottled light orange brown and the outer surface mid beige brown. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of early pottery. There is no glaze present. The base of the sherd is decorated with a number of crimps created by fingers. This forms a pie-crust decoration typical to pottery artefacts from the late medieval period. From the base of the sherd a diameter for the base of the pot can be estimated; this would be approximately 29cm. The angle between the base of the pot and the sloping side is approximately 60º. There is not enough of the body of the pot surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape of the vessel. There is no evidence of soot on the outer surfaces of the pot. This would suggest that the pot was not used for cooking on a fire. The pottery measures 68mm length, 78mm width is 24mm high and 3.8mm thick. It weighs 50.99 grams
