The buckle frame is made from cast copper alloy. It measures 18.4mm in length from side edge to side edge. The width from the apex of the loop to the strap bar is 15.9mm. Its weight is 1.58g.

In plan the frame is a sub-oval shape. The strap bar is off-set, narrowed and is sub-rectangular in cross-section. The outer edge opposite the strap bar is sub-rectangular in plan and section. The side edges are sub-trapezoid in cross-section and graduate outwards. The reverse of the buckle is flat and undecorated. The pin is missing.

The buckle is heavily abraded and in poor condition. It is possible that the buckle may have been decorated, but the condition of the buckle is so poor that any trace of decoration has now been removed. The buckle is light matt brown in colour with numerous green patches of active copper corrosion on the front and reverse.

In terms of shape a similar example can be found in Egan and Pritchard (Egan, G and Pritchard, F. 1991 Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3. Dress Accessories c.1150 – c.1450, HMSO, London, fig.44; 294). It should be noted however that the rectangular outer edge of the illustrated example is bigger than on the recorded example. Egan suggests that these type of buckles date to the late 12th to late 14th centuries (p.76).
