Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl made by copying one half of a biconical whorl in an open mould; with a central moulded hole of diameter 10.5mm. The convex side retains indistinct traces of a moulded medial circumferential rim, another circumferential line round the hole, at a slight remove; and bars which ran between these features to form a series of trapezoid compartments. A stippled appearance to the surface probably arises from use of a sand casting bed. This whorl would probably, and the whorl it was copied from would certainly, be more apt to plying cord than spinning thread. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600
