A complete lead weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably medieval to post medieval period, c.AD 1200-1700. The object is plano-convex with a flat base, tapering sides and an irregular top. A central perforation runs through the object and all surfaces appear undecorated. The object has significant narrowing to one side suggesting it was suspended in use.
The metal has a light brown/grey patina and is worn. The object is 24mm diameter, 8.9mm tall and weighs 20.4g. The perforation is 7.2mm in diameter. This mass does not fit obviously into any standard systems of measuring mass.
Lead objects such as this are common metal detector finds but are rare from excavated contexts. This means that the dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards.
The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.).
