HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: WAW-A6EB87

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete, copper alloy harness pendant, likely of Medieval date (c. AD 1200-1400).

The object is cruciform in plan, though there are no rounded knops at the end of the limbs and the bottom limb is larger than the other three. At the top of the object, there is a transverse sub-oval suspension loop (band width: 2.17mm; internal dimensions: 7.14mm long, 5.86mm wide; 9.42mm thickness including loop) and in the intersection where the four limbs of the cross meet there is a raised, circular cell that is 8.43mm thick, has walls 1.09mm wide and an internal diameter of 5.35mm. Part of the wall of the raised cell is missing from 10 o'clock to 1 o'clock. The horizontal limbs start at 3.03mm wide and expand to 3.84mm wide on the left and 3.26mm wide on the right. The vertical limbs start at 3.42mm wide at the baze of the cell and expand to 4.23mm wide at the top and 4.18mm wide at the bottom. The object has a largely dark greenish brown patina with some more light green patches. There are assorted historic chips on the object, including one on the bottom left of the bottom limb and on the end of the left limb,

There are other potentially similar items on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database all of which are Medieval harness pendants dating to the 13th and 14th centuries. These items include WILT-11FCD4, SUSS-648632, and NMGW-878E51.
