A bronze head and a fragment of the shaft of a possible large pin. The head is pyramidal and stepped, it is divided into five steps, which are plain and relatively irregular. The head has a flat underside with marked crude abrasion/file marks. The head measures 16.8mm in height and 18.5mm in base diameter. The shaft has a circular cross-section and has several indentations, perhaps created by a hammer. The shaft is c11.9mm in surviving length and 4.9mm in width.

Although possibly more likely to be post medieval this object could alternatively perhaps be a late Bronze Age pin type. A British parallel though not very close, being slighhtly smaller and decorated is illustrated in M J Rowlands 'The Organisation of middle Bronze Age metal working' in 1976, BAR 31, plate 9, 166. This parallel comes from Gwethean, Cornwall. Other, perhaps closer parallels are known from Germany (see B O'Connor, 'Cross-channel relations in the lter Bronze Age, BAR International 1980, 122). These pins are often decorated on the shafts so it is unfortunate that the Thetford example is missing the majority of its shaft.
