BUCKLE

Unique ID: WAW-BD3623

Object type certainty: Certain

The object is a sub-oval framed buckle, which has a buckle plate attached. The frame and buckle plate are made from cast copper alloy. Egan and Pritchard illustrate similar buckles, No. 262 in particular and No. 274, which date to the late 13th century to 14th century.

The buckle is a sub-oval shape in plan, with a slightly off-set strap bar. The loop is bi-convex in section and tapers slightly in width towards the strap bar. The strap bar is off-set and narrowed, and is sub-circular in section.

The buckle plate is a sheet of rectangular copper alloy which has been folded in half over the strap bar. Along the fold the edges and a central slot have been removed. The central slot allows for the pin, which is now missing. The upper plate is undecorated except for traces of gilding. There are also three rivet holes in a row along the plate. The underside plate is narrower than the upper plate, and appears to be undecorated. Both plates have been folded together forming an uneven ā€˜Uā€™ shape in profile.

Both the buckle plate and frame have traces of a dark green patina, otherwise the surface is abraded. The buckle and plate weighs 4.23g and measures 31.25mm long and the frame is 16.98mm wide.
