BUCKLE

Unique ID: WILT-BBDA52

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Incomplete copper alloy Anglo Scandinavian buckle, missing its backplate and pin. It is 51mm in length and max 27mm wide and weighs 19.39g.
The outside edge is angled downwards and outwards. Its axis bar has been cast in one piece with the rest of the buckle. The top-plate expands from 20mm (internal 14mm) wide at the axis bar to 22.5mm (internal 17.5mm) wide at the open end. The sides are 1.5mm deep. Two intact rivets 1mm in diameter are in place just below the axis bar and would have held the missing backplate in place (one of these has iron staining around it although the rivet is copper alloy). Between these is an oval hole 3x1.5mm which would have given the missing pin room to manoeuvre. At the open end in either corner is a pair of rivet holes with remains of corrosion around. One of these has iron corrosion.
The decoration stands proud of the buckle in places, especially around the open end. An animal has its open jaws around one of the rivets below the axis bar. Its neck curls in a loop, going slightly over the edge of the open end, and appears to have a limb tucked behind it. The body then extends around the outside edge of the buckle, stopping next to the open jaw. At least four curlicues extend out of the body and thus over the outside edge of the buckle. The body weaves in and out of itself.
The internal dimensions of the buckle, a D-shaped area, are 14mm long x 12mm wide.
Kevin Leahy, Finds Advisor, comments : A very interesting and important find. It is an example of one of the buckles we see with a hollowed, angled front bar on their loops. It is decorated in the Anglo-Scandinavian Urnes style and is a lovely example of the style. It will date from the 11th century.
