A copper-alloy needle, probably dating to the Roman period. The needle has a circular-section stem which tapers to a point at one end. At the other, the stem flattens to accommodate the lentoidal, faceted eye, the shape of which continues as a triangular groove either side of the eye. The needle measures 110mm in length and has a diameter of 3mm. The needle can be assigned to Crummy's Type 3 (Needles with a groove above and below the eye) (Crummy 1983, 67). Roman examples appear to be third or fourth century in date, although the type does recur in the post-medieval period, so there is a possibility that this find could be much later in date.
