COIN

Unique ID: BERK-4DAA13

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A worn and deliberately cut copper-alloy Roman sestertius of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180), dating to the period c.AD 161-180 (Reeve period 8). Unclear reverse type depicting a standing female(?) figure left. Mint of Rome.

The coin has been deliberately cut in a straight line from 3 o'clock to 7/8 o'clock when viewed from the obverse. The cut is angled, sloping diagonally from the obverse outwards to the reverse. Modification like this would likely have removed the coin from circulation as a coin and indicates a secondary (possible votive?) function.
