Worn fragment of a copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch, c. 1st century AD. (c.75 - 175 AD). See Mackreth (2011) TR1.2a.  The fragment consists of the flared 'trumpet' head of the brooch and part of the bow. The hinge mechanism, pin and catchplate are missing. The head is decorated with scrollwork either side of a central line running the length of the brooch.  The design appears to be in a different metal or alloy – contrasting with the background of the rest of the brooch. The head is separated from the bow by a worn moulded band that only projects on the sides and front of the bow (being almost smooth on the back of the bow).  The bow is broken and the foot is missing. The brooch has a pale green patina, with the exception of the remains of the decorated scroll work which is a dark green/black colour by contrast.

Length: 44.8mm; width of head: 13.0mm; thickness of bow: 6.5mm; weight: 15.63g

Class: Trumpet
