A 19th century livery button. The silvered face depicts a bishops mitre with motto in banner above of IN . CRUCE . SPERO ("I believe in the cross"). The reverse is concave with a broken loop shank surrounded by a maker's mark of G & W BOGGETT / St. MARTINS LANE / LONDON. This mark dates the button to 1835-1838.
This button is attributable to Arthur Kett Barclay FRS, FRAS, FRGS, FGS (1806-1869) of Bury Hill, Dorking (see Fairbairn (1986) p33; Plat 12 number 10). He was a brewer and a renowned astronomer as well as being a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Surrey. See also SUR-6F4718.
