A slightly oval copper-alloy finger-ring.The finger-ring is 22.7mm in length and 20.8mm in width. It has been made from a length of thin rod 89mm long. The tip of one end has been flattened and pointed (possibly to resemble a snake head) while the middle of its length, which is 3.8mm thick in a sub-rounded cross-section, narrows to a finer point at its other end. Both ends have been bent round so as to overlap each other by 20.1mm. This finger-ring coils one and a quarter rotations around the finger.
Dimensions: Length 22.7mm, width 21.0mm, thickness 3.7mm and weight 3.8gm.
Coiled finger-rings can be difficult to date ranging from the Middle Bronze Age (see SUSS-C5D042 & WILT-038191) through to the Early-Medieval period (see BERK-86EB19, SF-93DDE8, LON-C41144, BERK-9AAF46 and embargoed records BUC-948C2B, PUBLIC-F99D63. The majority of securely dated examples have been found within Roman deposits (see DEV-863A98, NARC-A580EA, LVPL-E4AE23, ESS-2177C3, CAM-5C92A1, SWYOR-13E3D6, NCL-3D6C70, SWYOR-940C72, LON-5E2C60, WILT-5BA843, SF-EAECD3, CAM-DDBA3D, NLM-3D2611, YORYM-7F9FF0, WILT-A228F3, etc.). To date, no examples of this style of finger-ring has been recorded on the PAS database from a securely dated Medieval context and this supports the general understanding that they are not produced after the Early-Medieval period (until Modern times).

Notes:
The recorder felt that, due to examples of similar items recorded in other Portable Antiquities Scheme records, this example might be more likely dated within the Early-Medieval to Medieval, Anglo-Scandanavian style, dating from circa: AD1000 - 1250. These records were not cited when the record was initially created.
