A late Iron Age to Roman copper alloy end-looped cosmetic pestle, dating from 100 BC - AD 150. It is a curvilinear rod, D shaped in cross-section with a flat top and a curved lower face. It is thickest and widest in the middle. It tapers to a point at one end, and bends into a loop at the other. The loop is in the form of a stylised bird-head, although, unusually, it curls up and over onto the upper face rather than the lower face of the pestle. The metal is corroded and has a reddish patina with some concretion. It is 46mm long, 6.9mm wide and 8mm thick. 6.1g. Compare LIN-2DCB76 and NMS-37C0F8 which is another example with the loop bent upwards, and which cites Jackson 2010, fig.12. NCL-B2A3D0 is a different shape (more blade like) but also has the rolled forwards loop. Another significant, and similar type in Jackson's (2010) catalogue is Fig.535 which also has the upward loops, although it has a sharply curved rod, unlike this pestle.
