An incomplete cast lead-alloy steelyard weight dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410).
The weight is broadly bi-conical and consists of two similarly hemispheres divided by a circumferential ridge. The apex of the upper hemisphere has the remains of an iron attachment fitting consisting of two broken sub-rectangular-sectioned arms that formed a loop. The base of the attachment is visible at the opposite end of the weight in the form of a flattened bar.
The surfaces of the weight are very worn and abraded with widespread pitting and scratching.
The patination is light grey in colour.
The steelyard weight measures 30.9mm in height, 29.3mm in diameter and weighs 177.3 grams.
See KENT-3A0E1B on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database for a similar steelyard weight.
