Incomplete lead spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period (AD1300-1500). The whorl is made up of a central bi-conical body that is decorated on both faces with a series of raised triangles and pellets. The perforation has an internal diameter of 10.8mm. The surface of the whorl is worn with a powdery white patina.
Diameter: 28.5mm; thickness: 6.4mm; weight: 22.3g.
Notes:
Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. Examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500.
