A fragment of a late Roman copper-alloy "dolphin" buckle of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) Type IA, dating to c.AD 350-450. Only one half remains, which takes the form of a confronted dolphin head with its mouth open and a prominant mane or ridge decorated with diagonal grooves running around the edge. The buckle has broken across the junction with the strap bar and at the meeting point of the confronted heads. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
