MOUNT

Unique ID: HAMP-9BA264

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Roman cast copper-alloy 'vulvate' or 'coffee bean' mount dating to the later 2nd to 3rd century AD. The mount comprises an oval plate with damaged margin and a raised, central oval boss with a deep medial groove along its long axis. The reverse of the mount is concave with integrally cast projecting lugs, with flattened terminals at either end.

Notes:

These mounts are found quite widely on Roman sites (e.g. Nicolay 2007: p387) and are thought to have decorated horse-harness. The raised central boss has been interpreted as representing a vulva.
