Incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch of Medieval date (AD 1200 – AD 1400). Length 27mm, width 20.5mm and maximum thickness 4.4mm. Weight 4.18g.

The piriform frame has a maximum width of 5mm and is about 3mm thick. It is flat at the front and the outer edge has a small step around the periphery. Each side of the frame, on the front face, are three equally spaced collets, the maximum height of which are 1.4mm. The top of each collet is abraded. Consequently, it is not possible to ascertain their original height. Five of the collets contain settings of a soft white paste, probably calcium carbonate. The setting in the central collet, on the left side, is composed of a harder and slightly shiny material that has a blue tinge. This setting is loose and can be removed to reveal a rounded bowl shape interior. Just above the central collet, on the right side, is a small pin hole which contains a fragment of a copper alloy wire pin. There is no indication as to where the pin tip rested on the opposite side of the frame. However it must have rested just above the central collet with the blue tinged setting. Between each collet there are two rows of punched circular depressions. Each of these depressions has a raised central pellet. The reverse is plain and concave near the inner edge and flat close to the outer edge. The brooch is in fair condition and the majority of the surface has a mid-green patina. There appears to be no trace of gilding.

Notes:

A close parallel for this brooch is one that was found near Winchester, Hampshire and published by Richard Hattatt (Hattatt 1987, 384, fig. 125, ref. 1427). However, this Winchester brooch has eight collets rather than six and the decoration between the collets is quite different. Hattatt dates the Winchester brooch, c. thirteenth to fourteenth century.
