A rim fragment of a copper alloy vessel of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 - AD 1700).
The rim fragment has a rectangular cross section. The rim type consists of a flat topped but rounded lip. This section is possibly from a cooking vessel either a cauldron or posnet (See Fig 1 in Butler, Green and Payne 2009 for examples of the vessel type).
The fragment measures 43.2 mm in width, 26.7 mm in height, 4.0 mm in thickness and weighs 18.1 g. Not enough rim was present to accurately determine the original rim diameter.
The fragment is a dark green colour, with a fairly smooth surface patina.
Cooking vessels of this type were in use from as early as AD 1100 and slowly go out of use by AD 1850, after being superseded by cast iron pots and saucepans (Butler, Green and Payne, 2009, 1).
