A complete cast lead flat circular seal matrix of Medieval date (Probably 13th century AD).

The seal is flat and circular although distorted. The reverse of the seal bears a lug at the top and is decorated with a central pellet and three concentric moulded circles. The 9.2mm long, 8.3mm tall lug is unperforated and bent sideways against the reverse of the matrix. The edge of the reverse is raised all the way around.

The central motif of the matrix is a fleur-de-lis with a central pellet and strongly curved petals within a concentric circular field. The lily is oriented in line with the S’ in the inscription. The inscription begins with a star initial mark at about 1 o’clock and reads as follows:

This translates to: The Seal of Philipp Soor. The seal engraving is of relatively high quality and survives well for a lead matrix. The matrix is covered by a white patina.

As kindly noted by the finder, the original owner of St Fagans castle was Sir Peter Le Sore- Philipp Soor may be a descendant or relation of the Le Sore/ Le Soor family.
