SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: KENT-61B428

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A worn/abraded and incomplete flat lead non-heraldic personal seal matrix of Medieval date c.AD 1200-1300.

Description: The matrix is flat and circular in plan. On the front is an engraved central six pointed star or flower with pointed oval petals/rays. This is surrounded by a legend which starts at twelve o'clock and runs retrograde (anti-clockwise) around the matrix so as to appear the correct way when used. The legend read "+S'WILL'F.ICAB", this is an abbreviation of Sgillium William fillius Jacon (possibly). This translates as Seal of Thomase son of Robert,  There is some wear and folding at roughly 12 o'clock of the seal matrix. The reverse has small D-Shaped suspension loop at the apex of the reverse, vertically aligned. Both are however incredibly worn.

Measurements: diameter 28.41, thickness 9.65mm (including suspension loop 4.82mm thick without) and 13.83g in weight.

Discussion: This matrix fits with a group of commonly reported simple lead personal seal matrices dating to the 13th - mid 14th, such as KENT-756138. This group of relatively simple non-heraldic designs and crude personal inscriptions generally belong to the 13th century (Harvey and McGuinness 1996. 79-80).
