An Iron Age copper-alloy cruciform bead from a beaded torc dating to circa 50 BC – AD 150.

The bead is in the form of a quatrefoil. The central section is square with a square aperture. The aperture would have accommodated an iron rod onto which the beads would have been threaded to form a torc that could be worn around the neck. At each corner the bead terminates with a rounded knop. The object has a green coloured surface patina.

There are a number of similar beads recording on the PAS database including YORYM-B9EC9D discovered in Yorkshire that states that a more complete example of this type of beaded torc from Benwell, Northumberland is illustrated in MacGregor (1976) vol:2, p.198. GLO-EEB7E3 discovered in Gloucestershire which refers to an example in the collection of the Museum of Scotland; Piece of a Bronze and Iron Neck Ring http://nms.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-100-043-292-C. This example dates to circa 0 and 150 AD. It is suggested that this example would have had beads at the front section of the torc only and the back two-thirds of the neck ring would have been a plain ring, possibly of iron.

The bead measures 22.1 mm in length, 21.3 mm in width, 6.2 mm in thickness at the knops and 2.7 mm in thickness on the central plate. It weighs 7 grams.
