A complete but very worn Post Medieval copper alloy coin, probably an eight maravedis 'cob' coin of Philip IV (AD 1621-1665). The coin has a cut octagonal shaped flan. The obverse has a rampant lion facing left within a shield. The reverse is a castle within a shield and appears to be counter-stamped at top right with a figure of eight.
These are often called 'cob' coins after the Spanish word for copper which is 'cobre': they were crudely made in Spain initially and later in the Americas for use in the Spanish colonies. The flans are often, as on this example, an irregular shape.
