Roman (AD c. 43-70) Hod Hill type brooch (Mackreth 2011, Chapter 6, Part 2 HOD HILL 4.b.3, Plate 93); The upper edge is the wings in a tubular form with the edge of the bow being curled forwards with a slot in the centre. The axis bar and pin are missing. The bow continues down from the wings and is narrowed and undulating in width and depth with horizontal bars and grooves. Overal the bow tapers to the foot, which is bulbous and has a collar above. The catchplate on the reverse is solid and complete. The surface of the brooch has a dark green-brown patina. The brooch is 55.58mm in length, 17.99mm in width across the wings, and weighs 8.08 grams.
Hod Hill type brooches were very popular in Britain and a wide range of variants are known. In "Late Iron Age and Roman Brooches" Worrell (1998, p9) notes that Hod Hill brooches are closely related to Aucissa brooches from which they probably developed. They occur widely on the continent, particularly in Gaul and the Rhineland (ibid.). The main centre of production was probably Gaul, but some were probably made in Britain (ibid.). They are often associated with military sites and probably introduced to Britain by the Roman army, although they are also found on non-military sites (ibid.). Hod Hill brooches are known from post-conquest depositions and it is likely they went out of use c.70 AD (Bayley & Butcher 2004, p.153). This example can be classified as Mackreth 2011, Chapter 6, Part 2 HOD HILL 4.b.3, Plate 93.
