A New England three pence piece, issued by colony of Massachusetts, North America, of the 'Oak Tree' type, The coin is pierced at about the 2 o'clock point and clipped almost symmetrically around part of its circumference.
The coin has part of a date on it 165[?] hoverer the last number has been removed by the piercing,
Though dated '1652', such coins tend to be attributed to the period c. 1667 - c. 1674 AD. The argument is that the date either alludes to the foundation of the mint at Massachusetts or fixes a point during the British Commonwealth thus legitimising the colonists right to strike coinage which was otherwise reserved for the king, See LVPL-9E9604 and HAMP-936A
